Soy Energy, LLC will be holding the Official Ground Breaking for their 30 million gallon Biodiesel Plant at 1:00 p.m. on August 6, 2007 at the site which is 3 miles east and ¾ miles north of Marcus on Hwy 3.
Congressman Steve King will be the featured speaker at the groundbreaking. Other legislators will be in attendance along with representatives from the Iowa Renewable Fuels Association, Iowa Soybean Association, Cherokee County Board of Supervisors, and Cherokee Area Economic Development.
Charles Sand, Chairman of Soy Energy stated that this groundbreaking is the beginning of the construction for the project that has been nearly two years in the planning. Soy Energy will produce 30 million gallons of biodiesel from the plant that features a flexible front end that can utilize feedstock from Soybean oil, animal fat, corn oil and other vegetable oils. The plant will also feature a biomass boiler that will use biomass pellets from the Cherokee County landfill for its source of energy. This feature alone will save 60% of energy costs compared to natural gas. Soy Energy will employ 24 at startup and total cost of the project will be $60 million dollars.
